What is acne?

Acne, also known as Acne Vulgaris, is a skin disease that involves the oil glands at the base of hair follicles.

Human skin has pores (tiny holes) which are connected to oil glands. The glands are then connected to the pores via follicles – small canals which result in producing Sebum, an oily liquid. With the help of the follicles, the sebum then carries dead skin cells to the surface of the skin. A small hair grows through the follicle out of the skin and when these follicles get blocked, pimples grows resulting in an addition of oil under the skin. It is characterized by blackheads or whiteheads, pimples, oily skin, and possible scarring.

The problem of acne is nowadays prevalent in many countries like India, Russia, China, South Africa etc. In India problem of acne has been increased in the metro cities like Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore because of pollution.

How acne is affecting all the ages of the people?

Dermatologists (skin specialists) say that approximately three-quarters of 11 to 30-year-olds will get acne at some time.

What causes acne?

Experts believe that the primary cause is a rise in androgen levels – androgen is a type of hormone. Androgen levels rise with the age.


Rising androgen levels make the oil glands to grow under the skin; the enlarged gland produces more oil.


Excessive sebum causes bacteria to grow by breaking down cellular walls.

Some studies indicate that a susceptibility to acne could also be genetic. Some medications that contain androgen and lithium may cause acne. Greasy cosmetics may cause acne in some susceptible people. Hormone changes during pregnancy may cause acne either to develop for the first time or to recur.

According to a new study published in the Journal of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, the diet high in glycemic index foods and dairy products is now linked to acne.


Types of acne pimples:

  • Whiteheads – They are like blackheads, very small and mostly appear on the nose, cheeks, and forehead. Moreover, whiteheads are more common in the acne-prone skin because the cells lining the pores are stickier, thereby blocking pores.


  • Blackheads – clearly visible, they are black and appear on the surface of the skin.

Usually, a blackhead is not caused by dirt. Scrubbing your face

vigorously when you see blackheads will not help.

  • Pustules – They are red at their base and have pus at the top


  • Nobules – clearly visible on the surface of the skin. They are large, solid pimples. They are painful and are embedded deep in the skin


  • Cysts – They are filled with pus and are sometimes painful. Risk factors for developing a cyst are related to the underlying causes of the cyst formation.


Though acne is not dangerous, it can leave skin scars. It can also affect psychologically and among the teenager, it can cause depression to some extent.

In most cases, acne can be controlled and sometimes cured with treatment which also involves prescribed medicines.
